Most common Power Tools
Power Drills: The most common among all the power tools, these equipments drive screws, fasten bolts and drill holes and are available in the form of stationary drill presses and corded / cordless drills. Grip configurations also play a large part in their classifications; generally, they are divided into:
Pistol grip drills: Shaped like a pistol with the handle located at the back of the drill.
T-handle drills: The most popular types, these are shaped like a T and provides for an improved balance.
Right angle drills: These ones come without a barrel since the drilling-bit extends simply at a 90 degree angle from the drill\'s handle and the chuck, the holding device with adjustable jaws.
Hammer drills: These are so named because of the pounding action they impart to the act of drilling. The most appropriate type for masonry purposes, some of the hammer drills feature Rotary hammers to deliver more power with the aid of specially designed bits or chisels.
Cordless power drills: This variety is either made or broken by the voltage upon which it functions. Voltage is directly proportional to the drill power and its weight; variable-speed drills are thus better for increased power and accuracy. The 13.2V and lower varieties are lightweight ones and are the ideal ones for occasional domestic maintenance jobs though the 18V cordless drills are the most common for the purpose. The 24V cordless drills deliver much higher a torque and are mostly preferred for heavy-duty masonry work.
Power Saws: Higher the voltage/amperage, higher is the power of a power saw. Power saws are classified into eight main types.
Band saws: Meant for sawing through large pieces of wood stock. A thin blade also makes it useful for decorative work.
Circular saws: Also known as handheld rotary saws, these ones feature circular blades that can create shallow or deep cuts depending on the diameter (larger diameters make deeper cuts).
Jigsaws: Small, portable, and versatile, the jigsaw can cut a range of materials from soft wood to light metal.
Miter saws: Circular saws with a stationary attached base, these ones are meant for precision woodcutting purposes.
Reciprocating saws: Thin, straight blades for simulating the motion of a handsaw, these ones provide for fast, convenient cuts.
Scroll saws: A high-end instrument for highly detailed works.
Table saws: Stationary units with rotary blades for making long, straight cuts. Used by professional carpenters.
Tile saws: Almost like the table saws, these are meant for wet-cutting tile, ceramics, and stone.
Router: Meant for working on wood, a router is used for evenly grooving out joints and decorations. A drive shaft and a steel or carbide-topped router bit is a standard part of these equipments, whereas horsepower and bit-shank diameter are important criteria. More horsepower translates to more heavy-duty cutting, while larger bit shanks are meant for holding larger blades. The types are as follows:
Fixed-base routers: A fixed drive shaft being its chief feature, the fixed base routers are less versatile but more intuitive to use.
Plunge routers: More top heavy and cumbersome than fixed-base routers, the plunge router's spring-mounted driveshaft and retractable cutting edge grant it the freedom of staying as it is without being lifted in between the cuts.
Sanders and grinders: Almost identical in their look and function, it's their application that varies greatly. While sanders primarily remove wood stock or apply a smooth finish to a project, Grinders are used to grind, cut, finish and shape a large variety of materials. The three types of sanders are:
Palm sanders: Lightweight, portable and useful for small projects.
Orbit sanders: More heavy-duty than palm sanders and useful for
larger projects.
Belt sanders: Appropriate for removing hefty amounts of wood stock
without much time and for rough sanding before final touches.
The grinder types are as follows:
Bench grinders: From sharpening tools and removing rust, these are also used for shaping handheld items.
Angle or straight grinders: Features grinding surface situated at 90-degree to the motor.
Die grinders: Feature a long spindle that reaches the inside of cylinders or ports.
